Editing a Role

How the Edit Role popup behaves for system roles, custom roles, and permission updates.

Work Planner Team12 April 2026

Editable role rows on the Roles screen open the Edit Role popup. What you can change depends on whether the role is a system role or a custom role.

What You Can Edit

  • Custom roles: you can change both the role name and the permission checkboxes.
  • Member role: this is a system role, so the name field is locked, but permission changes are still allowed.
  • Admin and Owner: these roles do not open the edit popup from the screen because they are protected.

Fields In The Popup

  • Role Name: editable for custom roles only. The same naming rules used on create still apply.
  • Permissions: the grouped permission checklist that defines what this role can do in the selected business.
  • System role note: when a protected role is shown as read-only, the popup explains that system role names cannot be changed or that the role has all permissions.

What Happens After Save

  • Business-scoped update: the role is updated for the currently selected business only.
  • Screen refresh: Work Planner reloads the role list so the counts and labels reflect the saved version.
